Coastguard Rescue Video of F/V Katmai Crewmembers
Wow - tonight’s episode was sobering, based less on the usual crew of crab fisherman than on the harrowing survival stories of the four Katmai fishermen who were rescued by the coast guard. Seven other crewmembers weren’t so fortunate. You can watch the raw video feed of the coast guard rescue below:
As for the Deadliest Catch crews, it looks like Keith and the Wizard were having a super-rough start to the season - but strangely, at the end of the episode, when they did their usual “crab count”, the Wizard looked like it was up there, number-wise, with the rest of the fleet. Not sure what to make of that… We didn’t see much else this episode - a few bits about a similar shipwreck 28 years ago from a Cornelia Marie crewmember, and some crabbing shots from the Northwestern (they seem to be “on the crab” at this point, doing the usual 20-hour-grinds).
I’m guessing the fans who really love watching their favorite captains and boats probably feel a bit let down by this episode, but on the whole, I liked it. What a story. These guys went through seventeen hours of absolute hell on that lifeboat. The damned thing flipped over something like 50 times throughout the night - can you imagine that? Jeez. Anyway, it really puts things into perspective. Like the guy said on the Cornelia Marie, all they got under their feet is that boat - and it could just as easily be them in the water at any given moment.
Best wishes to the crew of the F/V Katmai and their family members…

I think this show was done beautifully. It showed respect for those that were lost, showed the pain and gratefulness of those that survived and reminded us all that this is not “just tv”. These are real people, doing a very difficult and sometimes deadly job. It reminded me to cut them some slack as I watch the rest of the season. I love the show, I love most of the captains and the crews - even those that I do not love, I give credit for the job they do.

I sincerely enjoy watching each season. I can’t seem to get enough of watching. I will be the first to admit that I have no desire whatsoever to do what you guys do. I don’t believe there is enough money made that could coax me out in those treacherous waters. Please know that my prayers go with you all.
I firmly believe that if you take Jesus with you on each trip, that you will certainly be safe. He knows those waters better than any of us. Take care and God bless you and your families.

I cried watching the story about the Katmai tragedy. Discovery Channel did an excellent job with this episode in letting the survivors explain their experiences and showing how incredible the coast guard is. My prayers to all heroes and to the departed.
I absolutely love to follow all the fellas on the crab fishing vessels, have been watching since day one and am so hooked to your show.
Keep up the good work and happy, safe fishing to all the guys.
xoxo

I just want to say I saw your “Mother’s Day” greeting, and if that’s the best you can do, you need a transfusion of manners and good taste. That’s disgusting. I know of no mother who would find that foul greeting acceptable or tasteful or feel esteemed by it. Also, you’re teaching young kids how to treat their moms, not a good example by a long shot!

Our family has loved watching DC. We gather together and we enjoy watching the show and to see what is going on with the fleet. However, last night I had to turn the show off because of the language. Yes the words are bleeped out but my children still know what is being said. The past seasons have not been like this so why did the Discovery Channel feel that they had to go there. TV in general is horrible enough but the Discovery Channel seemed to seperate themselve from the others. We will no longer be watching the show.

MROCK,
I hear you about Keith and the greenhorns. I was wondering the same thing. Saw the pattern forming awhile ago, and it was confirmed again last night when I saw the show where him and Monty ran another kid off, then picked up the guy from the Time Bandit, who those guys dumped. Thought is was weird how the greenhorns on the Wizzard never work out. The show glorifies the captains but I think life as a deckhand under some of them, Wizzard and Time Bandit come to mind, can be brutal. Believe the greenhorn pay is low to begin with and I bet it drops way down if you quit before the specific season ends while the captain/owner and rest of the crew put more $$$ in their pocket…I think Monty is a bigger dope/dickhead/A-hole than Keith…though Keith is very manipulative and much more sly…

Hi,
The coverage of the loss of the Katmai was very sobering. The fact that it took the chopper 7 hours just to reach the scene really brought home just how isolated they are when things go wrong. It’s a big ocean and people are insignificant by comparison. I find myself asking if it’s all worth it in the end. How many people sat eating their meal of fish or crab stop to think for one moment the personal suffering and feats of endurance that have gone into putting it on their plate.
I guess the engineer decided to opt for a (relatively) quick death compared with the likely lingering death over many hours with little hope of rescue, very sad.

capt.ron,
Have some F’kin RESPECT man!
Your mum, dad, and rest of your family might miss you too, if you were DEAD!
R.I.P. to all those fishermen/women lost at sea each year worldwide.
P.S. - Cal, regarding the crack about the wives, Get a life!!
P.P.S. - Without the marvellous effort these fishermen (CHEERS) put in, you would have to go out there and get them yourself or go without, because they supply a lot of your supermarket food chains. They make it easy for you to just go down to the shops and buy it locally.

Hi guys! It’s just amazing what these guys going through. It’s so sad to see people loosing their lives actually I have 3 uncles and 1 cousin that drowned while fishing….
It’s time to do something about their safety….
Have you heard about the Ovatek life raft before? It’s an egg-shaped Fiberglass dual hull life raft, it protects from hypothermia, indestructible, easy to board, you can wait out a storm inside the Ovatek without launching…. it’s just an amazing product..please do something about the safety of yourself and your crew… take a few minutes and stop on Ovatek web page… http://www.ovatek.com and check out all the videos where you see the Ovatek life raft going through all sorts of testing like drop test, destruction test, water tightness test.
Gentlemen, Have a safe season and hope to ear from you….
Remember http://www.ovatek.com
Sincerely
Eric Chiasson
