Deadliest Catch Season 4 - What do you think so far?
Well, we’re a few episodes in now… what’s your verdict? Is Season 4 the best so far of Deadliest Catch, is it ok but not spectacular, or has the show “jumped the shark”? Make your opinion heard using the poll below!
I’ve got my own opinions on this one but I’m going to hold back until a future post so as not to skew the poll results.

I was pretty turned off last night with that guy was mad and sucker punched that fish. It is still a live creature and I’m sure it felt pain. I won’t be watching the show for awhile.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:56 am
I agree! We are DONE with the show. I cannot believe that he did that and that they showed it on TV. I was shocked! Where PETA when you need them?
May 8th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
What the hell???!!!??? who gives a shit about that fish. Dude lost his cool it happens. It aint like its a real animal. It was a fish.
I love the show. I think it is just as good if not better than last season. Lookin foward to next week!!!!!
May 8th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Crab boy showed his superior brain power…..Low class behavior. The show is slipping.
May 8th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
FJ, You are an ass. A real man can be good at what he does and behave like an adult. Do you qualify?
May 9th, 2008 at 2:18 am
That Matt guy is a moron. I’m thinking he is stoned out of his gourd half the time. Ok, I guess the fish punch was a little surprising…….yet I don’t see you complaining when they hack em up and use em for bait….Or call for PETA when Edgar bites the head off of one for luck.
PETA…..jeez get real. It’s bait….not bambi.
As for this season so far? It’s getting better. Lots of drama last night and I enjoyed Sig and Edgar squaring off….
Maybe off camera they nursed that fish back to health and gave it a hug and a cookie.
Or maybe they hacked it into little bits AND USED IT TO CATCH CRAB……..
hahahaha
May 9th, 2008 at 2:23 am
Oh and one more thing…..
I noticed nobody got upset that Matt tried to strangle an actual person….haha…You guys have obviously never fished if you are weeping over the baitfish. What about the tons and tons of crab that are stuffed in a tank and systematically killed processed and eaten????? Why do you watch the show if you are worried about sea creatures suffering?
Cowboy up, seriously.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Scott, Good point,BUT you can still catch the fish / craps for consumption while acting like you have some active brain cells. I do like the show but the drama and playing up to the camera is getting a bit out of hand. I do respect your opinion though.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:31 am
I love the show watch it every week. I was just wondering what happen to Blake and the Maverick?
May 10th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Capt. ,if you are trying to convince me that Matt is a moron…..I know he is
Nobody likes to see a creature suffer pointlessly, so I get that point too. That guy has meth freak written all over him.
May 11th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
I thought it was rediculous when Matt punched the fish. You are too old to be throwing a fit like a child but, that is how Matt seems like a child with all the drama from last year with the jail thing and court. The greenhorn on the Northwestern boat seems to be stepping it up this year. I feel sorry for the Hillstrand Bros. their sibling left early but, talked a big game (that sucked). The young one on the Early Dawn the one that fell asleep at the helm (kick his ass off) he doesn’t seem to be taking this seriously and that can get you and the rest of the fleet killed. Sucked when Johnathon feel in the water (can’t make that up for good for good T.V.) or you’ll get yourself killed. I love Sig and Edgar and Phil they are the best. LOVE THE SHOW and haven’t missed one YET! Knock On Wood….
May 17th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Does anyone know what is happenning with Phil Harris? They haven’t shown him and the crew lately!
May 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I think the show is as good as ever. I got a kick out of one of the crews being at a NYC Barnes and Noble a few months ago for autographs. I’m amazed at the popularity of the show.
May 18th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
About 6/7 years ago I watched the one hour special called “Dealiest Job in the World”. That was great. They followed one boat the whole show, the Fierce Allegiance. Loved it. I watched every episode since, and like the show alot. But like every great show they screw it up be trying to make it better. American Chopper is almost unwatchable now. It was great at first because it was real. Deadliest Catch is much, much better than American Chopper, but I hate the deck crews playing to the cameras. Some of the guys on certain boats are constantly talking to the cameras. Some behavior on deck is just forced and fake because they know they are on camera. They know a loudmouth will get attention. Make the show great again. Follow three boats only: Time Bandit, Northwestern, and Cornelia Marie.
May 18th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I think the show’s playing up the drama too much. Jonathon falling into the water was serious, but it’s also a funny thing, no need to make it seems like he was on his last breath. Same with all the fights too. We want to know more about their living conditions. If they want to make the show more interesting, take the camera down to the galley more often, ask the crew a few more questions. The fights and relationship are important, but it’s quite a turn off when they try to push it too hard. It’s no longer seem real. Season 3 is still by far the best. Hope for better editing next season.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:57 am
well i think the show is one of the better ones yea matt on the northwest needs to snap out of it there a little bit and get with the dame program eith that are fire his ass i would hire a meth head are any one tha is are was on drugs they are the ones that as you can see fuck things up but i think the show is going aswome so far and yea whats up with Phil harries on the conilea marie
May 21st, 2008 at 5:07 am
We’re a little behind in the UK but this seems to be a better season. I agree that there seems to be a little more playing up to the cameras and I would hate the fame to go to their heads!

okay seriously….everyone is making a big deal about the whole stupid fish scene and how Matt looks stoned all the time and how it was childish for someone to act that way and to go as far as punching a fish. SERIOUSLY!!!!!! I would LOVE to see you guys get out there do what they do non-stop like they do under the same conditions and see you guys still behave like an adult and not get upset and not looked somewhat stoned. Seriously…..do any of you guys know anything about crab fishing and what it takes from someone?
I don’t know what to say about the playing to cameras. Yeah, they are getting a little more dramatic, but I’ve known a few guys that have lived on crab fishing and have fished out there, and they say that everything that is being shown is normal. The guys on the show are actually complaining because they have cameras in their faces so much. One of the guys actually said that they wanted to take the camera and throw it overboard. Some guys seem to be getting a little more cocky, like the greenhorne on Northwestern, but other than that, it’s as real as it gets.
May 23rd, 2008 at 12:37 am
I never miss one of ya’ll shows. Well I guess now you know I’m from Texas. My birthday is May 27 If Sig , Phil, Jonathan,Edgar & Andy could tell me Happy Birthday I would make a 56 year old woman very happy! My husband of 35 years is a truck driver. He has been for at least 30 years of our marriage. We have 2 kids Jeremy is 36 and Mandy is 33. They are trucker drivers also. Every time ya’ll are one I watch it.
May 25th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Hey b. jean…..
Maybe I’m not as dumb as I look
As for your remark that nobody else knows what they are talking about and everybody looks a little stoned…….I did some Google-ing and found out that Matt from The Northwestern……..the one who is tired and looks a little stoned…is ij rehab. Guess what he is in for? Meth. That’s right….Meth…just like I said
May 27th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
AMEN! to the comment of follow three boats Cornelia Marie, Northwestern and Time Bandit. I do not miss Blake or the Maverick. Blake is an arrogant ASS and he proved it last season when Phil gave him a tip and asked him not to share it then he DID!! I was glad that Phil overheard him and I hope that “off camera” the elder Captain handed the newbie his ASS on a plate! PLATE FULL OF CRAB! And I am wondering also, what is up with the Cornelia Marie? If they ever take CM, NW or TB off the show….I won’t watch anymore.
May 28th, 2008 at 12:35 am
why did andy have to leave the boat, cant figure out how I missed that, lol
May 28th, 2008 at 1:52 am
Leave Matt the Hell Alone!!! He’s still a good fisherman despite having a sketchy past. If you’ve been watching the Northwestern since the beginning you would have seen the episode where he was going to a court date and needed to get in port in time etc. etc. After all of that the captain decided to invite him back again so I’d say that tells you the kind of mettle the guy is made of. People make mistakes and everyone deserves a 2nd chance or maybe even a 3rd. It may be your kid or family member that has a drug problem and needs help. Somehow though, I don’t think crabfishing would be very therapeutic … LOL
thus the reason he went after Jake. In all fairness Jake was bein’ an ass when he said Matt was a “joke” and there’s probly a lot of looks/sneers/jeers that we didn’t see on-camera that led up to that moment. If any techies on here have actually worked a construction/warehouse/blue collar job they would realize that stuff happens drugs or no drugs.
i love the show though, i think this is the best season by far and i’m with Broph on just following the Northwestern, Time Bandit, and Cornelia Marie cause those 3 crews seem to have more character than any of the others in the past seasons.
although i do like the legacy and history of the North American… glad they threw them in there but i’m sorry, their crew lacked the character and emotion of the those top 3 i mentioned. in any case, i wish a lifetime of good, safe fishing to every fisherman on the planet.
i couldn’t do your job and i’m pretty G-Damn Tough!!!
p.s. - and i can’t stand crab legs either… lol
May 28th, 2008 at 10:51 am
I probably would have said this was the best season if it wasn’t for the Early Dawn’s crew in the episode last night. I find the idea that a crew would call the boat owner behind the captain’s back appalling.
I really hope Discovery doesn’t have the Early Dawn on DC anymore. It’s true the captain wasn’t catching the crab, but the crew were a bunch of back stabbing little toadies.
Plus, I’m sure that Jake was doing more taunting and annoying stuff to Matt that led up to their physical altercation. Some of the editing was questionable, I think.
As far as Matt’s drug use goes? The guy is trying to stay clean and sober. I think fishing is both a hindrance and a help with that. I didn’t agree with Sig that Matt needed “competition” to keep him on his toes. What I saw was Sig pitting the kid against Matt and I thought it was wrong. Why ask for that kind of tension on deck?
I love The Deadliest Catch and I’ll keep watching it.
May 28th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
How many times over the years have we heard the guys say, “that’s why they call it fishing, not catching” when they would pull empty pots. With the fleet down to around 70 boats from, I think, about 250 several years ago, it ain’t fishing anymore. It’s “catching”. When the series started all the boats went out and fished for crab until that season’s quota was met, per the State of Alaska. The Department of Fish and Game, or whatever it is, notified all ships when to stop fishing because they kept track of that seasons totals. I think the seasons were like 5-8 days long. There were winners and losers. Today each boat has it’s own quota. The Time Bandit hit their quota in about 5 weeks, while the Northwestern and Cornelia Marie were at sea for 8 weeks if I heard correctly. All we saw was empty pot after empty pot being pulled by the Cornelia Marie, and they played up the drama of a terrible season all year. Then last night they say each guy on that boat made over $40,000 because they filled their tanks. It took them twice as long as some boats, but they did it. I hate that Discovery tried to create some bogus storyline of impending financial doom for the CM.
May 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
hey scott…..
I didn’t say say that nobody knows what they are talking about!!! did I say it anywhere in there? didn’t think so. As for the whole meth thing……..o well. Doesn’t mean that edgar and sig are going to let a guy get high while he is fishing…..sorry, but sig and edgar care more about their crew than most others….and I don’t think that they would let matt put himself in that much danger! Besides….when is he going to find the time to get high on that boat?
May 29th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I think the show is fantastic…and even though it is a “reality” show it is shown for our entertainment. It seems a lot of people are watching and will continue to do so. For those people upset about the fish punching scene it should be realized that the sea-life caught in the traps cannot always be thrown back. That’s a hazard of the industry. I buy my meat/seafood from the grocery, just like everyone else, knowing that at some point there is questionable treatment. I do like the NW, TB, and CM; but I also like the Wizard. I think it’s unfortunate that someone’s drug problem is brought to life in such a way but true Alaskans are a crusty bunch and this show is true to form (born and bred Alaskan here). I think the men are rough around the edges, a little seedy and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
May 29th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
No disagreement here. Rough and seedy is what the job needs. Hell, I’m a drywall contractor…I’m surrounded by lots of guys who would never be invited to Grandma’s tea party. I actually stuck up for Matt when a couple twits wanted PETA called for punching baitfish. I just gave my opinion that he seemed like a drug addled idiot. If Sig feels his complacent druggie deckhand needs a kick in the butt by letting his hardworking up and comer outwork him….it’s his damn boat. I have guys that work for me…..it isn’t fun work. On the other hand it ain’t the Bering Sea…and I will happily pass over an experienced guy who is lazy and on drugs (And trust me, it happens a lot in construction) for a kid who wants to work. Have you ever been around somebody who is on Meth? Scary. Zombie time and unpredictable. If he’s getting clean, good for him. When that show was being filmed, he was using. You wouldn’tl et him within 5 miles of your street in that condition. Easy to be PC when he isn’t workin next to you, half speed and making an already dangerous job even worse, by using that shit.
May 29th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
yeah scott, i live in the hood so i’m surrounded by it… lol… there’s nothing PC about my neighborhood. i respect everyone’s opinion though, my true opinion is that I hope Matt got his s**t together and is off the junk cause he’s actually one of my favorite guys on the show. Yeah, a little stupid and dangerous… but funny and definitely a good worker. I’ve got a best friend who’s the same way. I can take about an hour of it before I gotta’ go, wouldn’t want to be trapped on a boat for 6 weeks with him… LOL
anyway, let’s change the subject and point at “fat boy who got a job with dad’s company because he didn’t want to go in the army” … i agree with Jennifer McKenzie when she called them “backstabbing little toadies”. I saw in the preview for the upcoming season that the captain is still there so obviously he didn’t get fired over the fact they had to lease out the rest of the catch and so forth. Even though he seemed kinda dickish I did really feel sorry for him that he has to put up with “baby boy” and his dad’s bullshit. I’m sorry, but if you want me to train your kid then it’s going to be done my way whether it’s your boat or not. I mean really, that kid could’ve gotten the whole crew wiped out by falling asleep at the helm and he gets fined $500??!! i think the dad should take his OWN life into his hands and train “Little Porkchop” himself.
the money must be really good cause I would’ve quit that job. right in the middle of the ocean, I would’ve faked a heart attack or somethin’ and had the coast guard take me safely home on a chopper and let Junior drive daddy’s boat back to harbor.
on a different note the ending of this season was amazing. when the Hillstrands won and did the drive-by over their dad’s grave. Sad, sad, sad. You could really feel the emotion and I KNOW they weren’t hamming that up for the cameras. I have a lot of family from kentucky and some of them had to dig their moms or dads graves and I always thought that would be one of the worst things to ever have to do. Hats off to the Hillstrands - you guys kick ass. I’ll drink a Pabst and smoke a pack of camels in honor of your pops.
May 30th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I love the Deadliest Catch. My husband got me hooked on it. I don’t know how they do it. Me, personally, I’d be scared to death, sick as a dog, and a real ‘B’ from lack of sleep. My hat is off to these guys! I watch it every chance I get….LOVE IT !!! and my sincerest thanks to all of you every time I eat crab !!!!!
June 5th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Reality is, whoever starts a fight, let alone strangling a fellow deckhand, should be canned the minute they get back to port. No exceptions. As a matter of fact, that little episode by Matt could/should put him in some legal trouble. What if he went after a fellow crewmember and he accidentally shoved the guy over the side? What happened on the deck of the Northwestern was totally unacceptable in any workplace, especially in such a dangerous environment. Big bad sig does nothing.
That team has to work together, or someone’s going to get hurt. To force guys to work 20 hours like that without a break has to be breaking some safety laws. At least there should be laws put into place. I am surprised there isn’t more criminal investigation considering how many people die doing this line of work. After watching that show I have come to the conclusion some captains cross the line and put those deck hands in unnecessarily dangerous situations. Yes it’s a hard dangerous job, but that doesn’t give these captains the right to work these guys half to death where they might make mistakes that cost them their own lives and the lives of their fellow deckmates.
June 5th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Matt obviously has some problems and a short temper, but they’re apparently not bad enough that Sig doesn’t trust him on his boat–Matt’s been fishing with the Hansens for 11 years. Tempers are going to flare in the kinds of situations they’re in; just be glad he slugged the bait that time and didn’t turn around and nail a crew member instead. Lunging at Jake was wrong, but it was somewhat inevitable. Although, if anybody tuned into the Catch Chat that week, they would’ve seen Jake talk about how good of friends the two are and there were no hard feelings about the incident–it was just played up drama.
Otherwise, this season just seems to be par for the course for me. The addition of the Early Dawn was disappointing; I dislike the crew greatly. Was nice to see Eric Nyhammer come back, even if it was with the North American. I do miss the Farwest Leader, though, as I was a big fan of Ragnhild.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
either way you slice it crabbing is going to be a dangerous business where people die. Until technology improves to help these guys do the job safer that’s just the way it is and that is why King Crab is so expensive to the consumer. Thus, that is why there are men like these that are willing to go out there and kick ass for 6 weeks or so to make that 20-50K.
I don’t think the solution is more laws, we can’t even enforce the ones we’ve got and they usually end up causing more harm than good… leave that end of the spectrum alone. I DO think those crabbing boats could use a bit of NASA technology though. I’ve noticed the equipment they use looks almost “mad maxish” in that it’s just slapped together out of pieces of stuff. Look at the coiler, it’s a car tire…LOL. And do the pots really have to be that heavy… there’s gotta’ be a material that will still sink, but me more lightweight. How bout something that “heats” the ice off of the boat?
that’s just a few ideas i’ve had… feel free to take ‘em and make your millions cause I don’t have the intelligence to make it into reality.
but remember me at christmas :o)

I will keep eating crab anytime i can just to support you, i look at eating it entirely different than i ever have. Love ya keep up the good work, ham it up! Linda

I did find it unusual that after the show on the 10th that they didn’t show previews for next weeks episode. I am not sure why they didn’t, though it could have been an error on the stations part.
June 14th, 2008 at 1:15 am
I was wondering that myself, Magnoliablossom. I think they are doing an “After The Catch” special next week. If you didn’t catch the 4 they did last year, it’s pretty riveting stuff. The Captains sittin in a bar swappin stories.Worth a watch!
June 20th, 2008 at 1:07 am
I haven’t been able to watch the season yet but have them tapped. I can’t tell what the order is. Does anyone know where to find that easily?
thanks
