The Top 3 Moments of 4×01 & 4×02 of Deadliest Catch

Wow!  The wait was certainly worth it.  Highlights from last night’s shows:

1.  Jake buying a 26 inch FLAT SCREEN TELEVISION, on his dad’s credit card, without his permission!

Seriously, what was Jake thinking?  Capt. Phil - predictably - threw a sh*t fit when he saw his son Jake putting together a custom-built mount for his flat-screen tv, right at the end of his bunk no less.  This when there was legitimate, serious work to be done.  Now that takes some cojones.  (Phil himself dusted off an old classic by repeating his aphorism from a previous season: “Now you know why lions eat their young.”)

2.  The FIVE-HOUR hunt for a cup-a-noodles on the Wizard!

Ok, we all know that fishermen are notoriously superstitious… everyone’s got their own little thing they’ve got to do before the season starts to ensure a safe and productive hunt.  The Hansen brothers have to bite the head off a fish, other boats have to listen to the annual Dutch Harbor radio blessing.  But the Wizard - apparently - can’t run things until they’ve got a Cup-a-Noodles steaming hot and ready to eat for the captain!  All work ceased on-board the Wizard while everyone looked in earnest for the damned thing… the search lasted for at least 5 hours but to no avail.   We’ll see if this has any appreciable influence on their results this year.  :-)

3.  The Bering Sea prank of the century!

Its only the second episode but already they’re pulling out the big pranks… and I mean BIG!  The Hillstrand brothers from the Time Bandit decided to pull a big one on Capt. Phil of the Cornelia Marie.  They loaded up the chassis of an old, yellow pick-up truck and stored it on their deck until they got out into the middle of the sea.  (Actually it sort of backfired on them as they had to constantly move the damned thing just to get any work done on-deck).  Anyway, once Phil had laid down his first string of pots the Time Bandit moseyed on over and hauled in one of them… they cut the pot off the string and attached the truck chassis, then sank it.  The poor crew of the Cornelia Marie almost died trying to reel-in the damned thing (I really thought their tackle system was going to break!) but everyone had a good long laugh when they saw what it was.  Phil gave it an “A+” as far as pranks go, and I certainly can’t think of a bigger or better prank than that!  The Hillstrand brothers said the next one would have to be an airplane to beat it… but I don’t see that happening.  :-)

I would say that those were my top 3 moments too!!! Good start to the new season.

I am a diehard fan of these guys but I thought the whole thing was a bit contrived. 1st I don’t believe Phil would have taken the purchase of a flatscreen so lightly after the shit-hissy he threw last season about using unauthorized credit cards HIS. Fine, you can keep it, but it’s coming out of your pay would have been my sentiment. 2nd the whole truck thing…….awww come on! That is so far fetched it stinks like week old fish. It’s dangerous to haul crap like that around. What happened conveniently to the gas/oil and fluids tanks. Its a bio-hazzard if not handled properly and one could be fined BIG time by the EPA for dumping illegally into the oceans in front of what, 40 million potential viewers. Granted, dumb ass Blake on the maverick said numerous times last season “if it doesn’t work or broken or any doubt over the side……..” and that was appalling. What happened to if you can get it out there, then take it back and recycle. And then there’s Phil, what dumbass would put a piece of junk like that truck back into the drink with cameras rolling. UNLESS one of the Discover Channel boats that were following picked it up and hauled it back to shore. Again EPS, bad image, fines! About the noodles, those things are vile.

Actually I think Capt. Keith said he wanted his Cup-O-Noodles cup to use for a spitoon. Yuck!

  4. Fan Says:

The cup-o-noodles WAS for a spitoon. I’m not sure that I believe that he really wasted 5+ hours of fishing time trying to find it…Also, as for the truck, i agree that it was an idea conceived for the show. One of the producers probably told them to come up with a prank that was better than last year’s pipe-on-the-line trick. I’m surprised that they would be willing to risk putting that thing on deck. What would have happened had they run into a monster storm? Sure you can lash things down but that hunk of junk was literally falling apart and could have caused havok on the deck. As for the environmental side of it, the truck was stripped down of all of its mechanicals so i’m assuming that they had someone clear-it from an environmental standpoint before dumping it. The Discovery Channel is very big on the environment and I’m sure most of the fishermen are too to some extent. They wouldn’t risk dumping fuel, bio-hazards into their fishing grounds. As for getting fined for what they did, i’m not sure but i don’t think they would be at risk of getting in much trouble for dumping it given that they were in international waters when they did it. The EPA has no jurisdiction over the open seas (i.e., 3+ miles offshore).

What a bunch of junk. I swear I used to be a diehard fan but it has gone downhill. It is obvious that this season’s “theme” is superstitions…. OOOhhh. It is also obvious that the TV influence has jacked the show. It was much more genuine in its early days. I am not so sure anymore. Particularly after this week’s news that they were caught with some creative editing. It may be the last season for this one anyway but they should have let it be what it was in the beginning. Somehow they took all the good out of it and made it yet another Hollywood type production. Next we will find out the Wizard’s big storm scene was really filmed on a backlot soundstage where they did Titanic. Give me a break.

I love this show and I think that the pranks so far this year have been pretty funny…who cares why they are doing them….these guys work pretty hard and they should be able to play hard without any of us passing judgement. I would, however, have told Jake that the cost of the TV was coming out of his pay, and the cup o noodles cup was for spittin not eatin.

  7. #1 Fan Says:

This show is great. So is Ax Men. Dirty Jobs is pretty cool. Ice Truckers sucked. So did the lobster fishing show. Has anyone seen the regular fish show? Pretty lame. The guys on the show are interesting and the effect that the cameras have is inevitable.

By the way, one of the Ax Men was talking s**t about fishermen in Alaska having it easy. Check it on the History website.

  8. Encrypted Says:

I thought the t.v. thing was contrived too; I mean seriously; if my kid blew that kind of money with my credit card (and why does he have his CC in the first place?!) I would have gone off the handle.

So either Cpt. Phil is spinless, for not doing anything about it or it was scripted.

  9. beringsea56 Says:

For the millons who watch the show but have never been there, Jakes kid was out of line but no more so than any thing most other kids have done following their fathers in this industry
As for the truck stunt hilarious, wish I would have thought that up to give phil after he dropped pots all over our gear a couple of years ago……pay backs I love them…

  10. Dazzy Says:

I just watched the first episode here in Canada, and I love it. I think they ham it up a bit for the cameras (how could you not?), but it’s not too distracting.

As for the truck, I may be wrong, but when they showed the underside of it as they were lowering it down to the deck, it looked like the whole underside had been gutted - meaning no fuel tank, no oil spills etc. It seemed to be just an emtpy chassis.

  11. Jan Says:

I love the show and all the guys on it. I would love to see a little more about what the familys do while their men and women are out to sea.

  12. drakemcfee Says:

The cup o noodle spit cup, well Ive always thought chewing tobacco is gross. Seriously I find it a stretch to believ that $$ motivated ppl would waste that much time to find the damn thing. then again fisherman are EXTREMLY superstious. As far as the pick up, I think the prank was partially thought up for the camera but ehh who cares it was funny as hell and they sure had to work for it. As far as them dumping it, their was nothing illegal about it at all. They didn’t violate any EPA laws as the truck had been stripped of it’s engine and tranny as well as any haz-mat matierials. AS far as the chassis, nothing illegal about that in international waters unless it is a bio-hazard it can go over the side. Most would be shocked at just how much junk is down there. However as far as the truck goes, it might actually prove to be a boon. Don’t forget various eco gruops often sink boats and throw chassis into stratigc places to form shelters for marine life.

  13. ChazK Says:

What some people need to understandis, these guys have all the time in the world to figure out what prank they can pull on someone. Working those long hours makes you goofy as hell. What else is there to do?, not much. All we could do during breaks in the military during long day was figure out who we were going to mess with. I also work in the North Sea Laying pipeline. When you’re the new guy on a boat or ship, you’re a target.

This is the the sort of TV armchair pronouncements that will result in 2009 U.S.A, going through the same catastrophe as 18 century France, 1917 Russia and 1938 Germany. They sink dozens of giant ocean going freighters, just a few miles off the beaches of Miami to create artificial reefs. About one in five of them develop minor oil “bleeds” after sinking. And those are “ocean freighter” not “old pickup truck” type bleeds. Some of them go on for 7-10 months and divers can’t find where they are coming from. And still they continue the program, because the benefits make those oil bleeds seem irrelevant. If they dumped that pickup just as it was - with no prep whatsoever. - the number of sea creatures that would use it to survive and help their offspring to survive in the middle of that bare sea floor will be in the millions. While that pint of oil that was left in it will dissipate without harming anyone. If beaches off Miami survive dozens of freighters, a pint of oil in the middle of the Bering sea is nothing, except a cause celeb to insult clear thinking people. Hell, that ANWR that we can’t use is leaking hundreds of gallons of oil a day through the natural seepage through the rocks and straight into the ocean. And that’s heavy unrefined crude - far worse than anything that could be in that truck. France’s tragedy was destroying it’s nobility, Russia’s tragedy was destroying it’s rich, Germany’s tragedy was destroying it’s non-arians, America’s tragedy will be destroying those who refuse to be stupid.

  16. TKG Says:

It is hardly surprising that a captain who will very unprofessionally berate and disrespect his own captain brother (in front of some of their shared crew, no less) about what he later calls “a brother thing” would think twice about wasting time AND money to look for a spit cup. The spitoon search pales in comparison to the very poor decision of making Monte look like someone who does not deserve or require respect. Take it to the wheel house or the state room for crying out loud! Now I am not saying that perhaps some of it wasn’t deserved, but in order for Monte to effectively captain during his next season the crew can NOT see his abilities and judgement questioned by another authority figure! There will always be whiney, insubordinate deckhands who look for anything to gripe about. I can just hear them now-”Why should we take his crap, his own brother says he doesn’t know what he’s doing!” When a shark smells blood….etc. etc. I like Keith, so I hope it was just a momentary lack of good judgement. But then there WAS that spit cup incident……

  17. Joanna Says:

love the show!!! Don’t forget, before the reeling in of the truck, the flour pots set that off!! Priceless! The Time Bandit rocks!!! ps. is the captain single??????

  18. Kim Says:

I liked the prank but imagine if that truck would have broken the equipment that pulled it out of the water. Did you hear those gears squealing? I’da been PISSSSSSSSSSSed.

  19. Txshizzle Says:

First of all, for those who have posted about the truck. The truck was ” Green” all things on it, or in it that could polute the Bering Sea were meticulously removed. Check out Disco’s comments.

I personally love the show, I don’t think the guys have gone ” Hollywood” as some fans have put it. Are they a bit awestruck by the roller coaster ride that has come from the shows popularity? Definately!! They are now and forever will be Fisherman! Name one person who was just living their lives..doing the job they love, and suddenly it gets put on television and everything changes in a heart beat. Wouldn’t you be a little overwhelmed? Come on now be honest.

I’ve posted many times before.. on other sites about the bashing. It saddens me, and it makes me embarrassed to call myself a fan in the same category as some of the punks I see on these boards that post such wretched comments about the various Capt.s and crews. It’s down right shameful. These are just people… people like you and me. They work hard, and take care of their families. They have no control over how the show is edited, or what is aired or not aired, or in what sequence.

Do you really think it’s ok to sit back in your Lazy Boys and make such derrogatory remarks about these men? Seriously do you? We can’t even begin to know them on a personal level. We’re fans of a freakin TV show for crying out loud. Enjoy it for what it is… .Entertainment and stop personally attacking them.

Ok I have said my 2 cents worth…. go ahead attack me now… we all know you will, because thats just the caliber of people like you, who bash others to feel better about themselves

  20. Jeni Says:

Please! The truck was fantastic ? All in good fun. Well done guys. I loved it. Keep the show going….We love it here in OZ..
