Season 4 - What do you want to see?
Well, Season 4 of Deadliest Catch is now just about three months away… what is it you’d like to see this season?
Personally, I thought Season 3 was the best yet. It really seems like the production team, film crew, etc. found their “sea legs”, so to speak, after the second season closed. There were some amazing shots in the third season from perspectives I’d never seen before, and I hope to see more of this in season four. The crew is constantly pushing the envelope in terms of film-making, getting new camera rigs and equipment installed on the boats, etc. so I’m really looking forward to seeing what surprises they’ve got in store for us this year!
I’d also like to see more shots of the families (though I understand many probably want to stay anonymous). But it seems to me like this would really help to personalize the fishermen even more. If we could be introduced to their wives, girlfriends (boyfriends? nah, probably not!), kids, etc. and get a feel for how they stay in touch while on board, what the families do at home while everyone else is out to sea, etc. I’d love to see a bit more of that.
But that’s me. What would YOU like to see in season four?

I love this show!! Talk about real live every day men making an honest living. I am so sick of all these other so called reality shows and all the pompass hollywood celebs giving them self awards every other month. The boats the crew and evan Mike Rowe make me proud to be man who makes a honest living with my hands.

I have to say, I am really looking forward to this new season. I started watching it again in season 3, after missing the 2nd season. I really look forward to the shows when they are on, I like the previews. I even got my girlfriend who would never be caught dead watchng a “reality show” hooked on it. This is definitely real life, and there isn’t any sugar coating this. She even has her favorites, Sig and Phil. I think Sig is the shit!!! We look forward to getting into bed and relaxing and watching the shows. Based on what I have initially read, the new season isn’t until April, I was under the impression in would start in March sometime. Anyone have a definite start date?
February 18th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I cannot wait for season 4 to start. I am literally wishing my life away waiting for Deadliest Catch. It would be an absolute dream for me to be on one of those boats - one with a lot of cursing and fighting. I love that! These guys are the toughest men on earth.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:26 am
Captain Jonathan rocks reminds me of Billy from Easy Rider lol, Sig and bro are a riot maybe he can chew off a crab claw this year to go with the Herring. Very entertaining program, waiting for the new season.
March 9th, 2008 at 5:00 am
I had started to watch the show last season. So far, I think my favorite captions are Sig, Phil, and Jonathan. I am a little curious to hear what the families think about these guys jobs! But I do understand if they do not want to be on the television. I am looking forward in the new season starting!
March 17th, 2008 at 12:29 am
Don’tchange a thing. If you start getting family involved it will never be the same. It will be like a spin-off and we all know they don’t work. The show is a hit the way it is, I don’t want to know what wife, girlfriend, or kids are doing, that will not keep me watching. That would not be exciting or dangerous that would be just another reality show
March 19th, 2008 at 5:53 am
I have purchased season one and two and in the process of sending for season three. I love this show and all the guys and their boats. They almost feel like family and it would be great to know the families more but understand if they didn’t want to be so public. I am always interested in the living quarters especially the galley. Love how Donna takes care of her guys with hot coffee and food and often wonder what it would be like to be a cook on one of the boats and fantasize planning hot meals and keeping the coffee strong and hot. I would love one day to have that experience. Good Luck with season four and eagerly await it’s arrival. pattie watson

More of Captain Johnathan, please. In fact I would be happy if they changed the name of the show to Deadliest Hillstrands and placed the main focus on the f/v Time Bandit, with occaisional appearances from the other boats.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 am
Dont change a thing!! The show IS great just the way it is. We all love it and keep it coming. Youre doing a great job! Best show on TV, hands down.

Well my son and I love the show and it brings back many memories. Having served on USCG Morgenthau 722 from 79 to 82 I know exactly what they endure with those days and nights and then there are the storm’s. We saved lives and battled the elements. Have a brew in the Red Dog and look for the lights of the day when the storms are away. May your hulls be full of catch and may your lives be safe and sound. Our prayers are with you and your families.

The thing that is talked about and never shown is “where are the chains connected on the rails”? We see them connected on the top but not the bottom. This is part of education. I’d alsoo like to see muc more of the crews. My favooite fisherman is Hiram Johnson. He’s fun! Remember fun? Don’t see much of it these days.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Best show on tv!! My husband, son and I watch it every week, and when it’s not on, we watch re-runs that I have Tivo’d.
Most thrilling moment that I can recall is when the guy went overboard and Jonathan saw it happen. His reaction and
that of Russell Newberry, and the rest of the crew, were nothing short of heroic!! When they got that guy on board, I was
on the edge of my seat with tears running down my face. Then, when Russell and Jonathan re-lived the moment, it was
all I could do to jump in my car and drive to Alaska to hug them!! (My husband stopped me)
Sig, Edgar, ‘Slingblade’, Phil, Jake, Josh, Jonathan, all the Hillstrand bro’s, crews of all the ships, God bless and keep you
safe. And every year, we send up goodwill thoughts to the families and friends of these brave men, including the camera
crews (of course), and Mike Rowe. I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.

What song was played in the end of season 4 episode 1?
Thanks for a possible answer.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 am
Snipets here and there throughout the season of the families would be nice. Maybe as a special hour show after regular season “Deadliest Catch at Home”. It would be interesting to hear how the familes viepoint on their loved ones being gone so much. Some of them are on board 10 months out of the year. That has to be stressful. Do they have Sat Phones, Sat Email, etc… I don’t want personal lives to take over my weekly fix, but I agree that it would humanize the guys even more and show that even macho men have a softer side.

way too much drama, too much acting out for the camera. i enjoy the show when they are fishing, working the boat and just being themselves.
May 18th, 2008 at 12:14 am
what i would like to see is the little problem child on the northwestern getting his ass kicked then fired…
May 26th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

June 3rd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
If we are in the Bering sea, where are the Russians. We are fishing right on their doorstep, We dont see their boats or hear them talking on the radio, do they have the same management plans as we have or are their seasons longer , How do they manage their crabs, SHOW US THE COMPETITION
June 14th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
i love the big wave
June 16th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I just want to say I love this show! King crab fishing is dangerous, but the Opelio (sp) season is even more so. Please let me know when the accident with Phil happened. Or has it happened yet. I missed quite a few episodes. Catch me up on the Phil situation. I hope his general health is better.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:32 am
You folks have to be the best Americans ever,I don’t even like crab. But damn sure I will eat it and NEVER complain the price is to high, your the best! I am proud of every one of you>D
June 24th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I liked the first couple of seasons, but it is getting old seeing the same boats year after year. The derby fishing was much better. Now the crews seem to be over acting for the cameras. There are more boats than just the 6 you see. Changing all boats every season would be a lot better. Season 4 sucks, every body is just playing it up for the camera. I actually liked the original Americas deadliest season best of all

Hello Discovery Channel,
My name is Mike Colapinto, I fished in the Bering Sea from 1986 to 1995. In this time I worked on 20 different boats. I fished every season & every fishery. I fished for Red crab, Blue Crab, Oppies & Baradi. I went to web school and learned to sew nets. I fished on Factory Trawlers & Catcher Trawlers I also worked on Mother ship Trawkers. I fished with Longline for Halibut, Black Cod, Grey Cod and Snapper. I fished for Salmon and I even worked on the tender boats during the Oil Spil in 1989. I loged my sea time and I obtained my captains license. I held a Captains license to 200 tons and a Mates license to 500 tons. I have writen a 200 page book about my Alaskan adventures. The stories are spell binding and amazing. I fished in Alaska when each fishery was a derby not a quoted. My stories span Alaska from Ketchikan to Nome, Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, King Cove and All night parties in Anchorage.
I write to you today to ask you if you would be interested in reading my story ? If so, I would be happy to share it with you. By the way, Deadliest Catch is the best show to ever air on television.
Sincerely, Mike “Rocco” Colapinto Phone # 949 606 2443
p.s. I now reside in Dana Point, California. I have a boat in the Dana Point Harbor

I just started to watch this show,it’s a tough job. I give you guys a lot of credit. How many times a year do you go out to sea? How long do you stay out there for? Why don’t i see women on your boat. I would also like to find out about Johnathan “Time Bandit”
Please send me an e-mail back, Please STAY SAFE
July 3rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
These men and their boats appear have no regard for the environment, and would probably take every last crab if they could. I think the practice should be outlawed and the show should be cancelled.

Deadliest catch is definitely exciting. But at what cost? TV ratings are huge. Why? Probably because crab fishing is in reality and to a large extent depicted as a highly dangerous life threatening occupation.
Lives are lost in the construction industry every year. Falling from heights is top on the list. One of the main safeguards is the obligatory wearing of safety harnesses hooked using extendible lanyards. In the past many “macho men” of construction died falling from heights. Look at the death stats for constructing the Brooklyn Bridge. Immense. That’s how far we would have to go back 110 years to witness the appalling disregard for the fisherman’s safety by captains and charge-hands as depicted on this show.
Fishermen risking their lives climbing over and securing safety baskets risking being washed into the sea away by 20 foot waves. No restraint. Total disregard for human lives.
Of course the channel and their cameras are as responsible as the captains, by exploiting, exacerbating dangerous practices to increase viewing. If anyone does fall in and drowns and this could have been prevented if safe practices were adopted such as tying off then who is the criminal. Certainly not the dead fisherman who does not know any better but to follow directions. Who is left? The Captain. to be sure this is the individual who does much boasting about working extended shifts - 20 hours without sleep and working in those conditions is CRIMINAL. And of course the Channel, who also would have expert representation - would they be party.
The reaction - Tie off to what? - the crane boom is constantly moving. A tie may prevent a deck hand from fleeing to safety or it may catch somebody or entangle someone. My answer to this is that there is always a way to make an activity a safe one. There will always be room for flexible lines (wire rope) and tie off points. The winch system for retrieving pots is a shambolic and a criminal set-up.
I can imagine those work contracts at who’s risk?. I can read the tension in the captains faces when they know their deckhands are at high risk due to exhaustion, placing themselves in dangerous and precarious positions. Once a captain called to deckhands to tie a line someone leaning over to free the puller arm - trained staff would not put themselves in these positions - criminal. In another scene deckhands are scaling the baskets with a shear drop to the sea with nothing to secure them from falling. So frail our skin and bones and yet so expendable.
Macho acts + greed greed and more greed = surefire death. The greedier they are the more risks. Saving the anchor was about the most pathetic scene I have witnessed. An impossible mechanical fix resulting in near miss by catastrophic failure. Sitting in the tower witnessing the lives of men being put to risk to save an anchor. This by itself is a criminal act, driven by greed. Shame on them.
So - are these captains really heroes of the sea, brave men who take on the might of nature. No, to my mind they are merely criminals, driven by averace. Where is the OSHA of the Sea?
So when work stops for a few moments of silence in preyer to remember a lost hand or colleague on another boat, a tear in the eye, even more viewers looking on, or I say to the captains who may have allowed this to happen through lack of safety initiatives and training or failing to implement safe work practices - SHAME ON YOU. And I ask OSHA - WHERE ARE YOU?

I am so hooked on Deadliest Catch. My favorite Captains are Sig and Phil. Even though Phil seems so tough on the outside you can see the love that Phil has for his sons and the love his sons have for him. I would love to see more of the inside of the boat…who does the cooking and day to day chores of the inside? I am not much of an outdoorsey type person but this show is the greatest. I have a newfound respect for all commercial fisherman especially the ones in the Bering Sea. I never knew the labor that these men go through for us to eat and enjoy crab. Keep up the great work and stay safe!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 4:55 pm
There was a classic scene in one of the episodes in which a crew member is passed out from exhaustion in the cabin, behind Hiram, and two additional crew members are sitting half-asleep on either side of him. Hiram is sitting there, grin on his face, looking like he’s got an unlimited supply of energy. I don’t know what kind of coffee he drinks, but send some my way.

This show used to be great, but now it is a bunch of bull. Why do people watch racing: to see wrecks. I would like to see the boats actually sinking. These same old sorry captains suck. Change ships every year. Someone should throw all of these captains off the boats, they suck. I would much rather watch up to season 2, then it gets fake. In the new season, they are showing the time bandit pulling in huge pots, but they have way less than the wizard which is supposed to be doing badly. Seems choreographed to me.
