How to Get a Job as an Alaskan Crab Fisherman

One of the most common questions here is: “How do I become an Alaskan crab fisherman?” Or, more specifically, how do they apply to get on one of the six or so boats actually featured in Deadliest Catch.

Let’s disabuse you of this notion right off the bat. Neither Sig nor Phil, heck not even greenhorn-captain Blake, is going to hire some guy off the Internet who loved watching them on the Discovery Channel. Guys who get crabbing jobs get them either (1) because they are friends/family with one of the crew or (2) are incredibly, incredibly lucky, in the perfectly right place at the perfectly right time. So right there, that eliminates 99.99% of the population of wanna-be crab fishermen from contention.

Then you have to consider the fact that some 75% of greenhorn crab fisherman absolutely hate the experience. So even if you are lucky enough to get on board, you may be in for a seriously rude awakening.

If you have any ego, whatsoever, and can’t be bossed around ruthlessly while keeping a smile on your face and a spring in your step… find another job.

If you enjoy sleeping at least once every twenty-four hours… find another job.

If you think breaking your wrist or losing a toe means you can’t work a full 71-hour shift… find another job.

In the end you need to remember - crab fishing is one of the most difficult, rewarding and competitive jobs out there, and its only becoming more and more popular with every Emmy-award nominated season of Deadliest Catch. Guys who land these jobs tend to keep them. Where else are you going to make six month’s salary in three or four days?

Finally you need to ask yourself why you want a job on an alaskan crab boat. Do you just want to test your masculinity? Do you want a chance to get on TV? Do you want bragging rights for your kids and grandkids, so you can sit back years from now and say, “Yeah, I did that once”? If you answered yes to any of the above, then you’re probably not cut out for the job.

The guys who succeed on these boats don’t do it because of the romance of the sea, or the chance for fame or glory. They do it because they’ve got families to take care of and traditions to uphold. Crab fishing is in their blood. Their lives are literally in the hands of their crew, and vice versa, so captains like Sig and Phil don’t want to have to rely on some snot-nosed kid who just wants the “adrenaline rush” of being a crabber for one season, just so he could say he did it.

So, if after reading all of the above you think you’ve passed all the tests and met all the criteria… then what?

Well, like a wise man once said, 90% of life is just showing up. Get yourself to Alaska - preferably either Dutch Harbor or St. Paul Island.

Even better, land a job with one of the processing facilities. The Hansen brothers of the F/V Northwestern suggest getting a job with Icicle, Trident, Westward, Unisea, Peter Pan or Royal Aleutian Seafoods. They’ll usually pay to get you up to Alaska, and they’ll even give you a place to crash while you work. The job is shit, the pay is slightly better than shit, but you’ll have a foothold in the industry and you’ll start to meet real-life crab fishermen. In this business, like in most small industries, its not what you know, its who you know - so the more fishermen you meet, the more contacts you’ll have and the better chance you’ll have of someone considering you for a rare job opening on deck.

The crew of the Northwestern also suggest the following two links on their website:

http://www.labor.state.ak.us/esd_alaska_jobs/seafood.htm
http://www.labor.state.ak.us/esd_alaska_jobs/jobfair.htm
http://company.monster.com/dentsea/
http://www.fishingjobs.com/
http://www.afjournal.com/
http://www.alaskafishingjobs.com/

Good luck to you! God knows there’s a part of me that would love to be on a crab boat for three days at peak season… but there’s an even bigger part that realizes I’d be curled up in the fetal position most of the time, puking my brains out and realizing what an awful, awful mistake I’ve made.

Hope you’re more of a man than I am. ;-)

UPDATE: If you’d like the experience of being a crab fisherman without actually, you know, being a crab fisherman… you can always sign up for a tour with the Aleutian Ballad. Yes that’s right, the very same boat that was featured on Deadliest Catch. They’re now doing 4-hour tours for people who want to learn more about the fish industry, and get an up-front and personal view of what life is really like for the men they’ve seen only on television. ? No, you won’t be going 400 miles out to sea with 50-60 foot waves crashing on deck - in fact, they stay in a relatively calm and protected part of the bay - but this is about the closest most of us land-lubbers will ever get to the “dream” (nightmare?) of being a deckhand on a full-fledged crab boat. So why not check them out?

http://56degreesnorth.com/default.asp?pageid=2

For those who don’t remember, yes, the Aleutian Ballad is the ship from Deadliest Catch that literally flipped over onto its side after taking a monster rogue wave in the middle of the night. The engines died, the computers were knocked out, and the crew was thrown from their quarters. Luckily the ship righted itself and they limped back to port for repairs. Incredibly, it was all caught on video. Click here to watch on YouTube.

I have done this before and most of the bigger companies are located in Seattle Washington. He is a good start if you want to try Commercial Fishing - “Blue North Fisheries” Location: Seattle Washington. They hire in Seattle and if the Boat is in Seattle your will ride up to Alaska on the boat, if not they will fly you up to Dutch Harbor. This does Require a physical and a drug screen to get hired on!! If your lucky you could get a job as a Ship Yard Deck Hand before the ship leaves and they give you a place to sleep and pay you to work on the Boat while in dry dock.

Need a Cheap place to stay while in the Seattle area? Try here: http://www.vashonhostel.com - Bring a tent and your sleeping bag, they have shower’s and a full kitchen. The rate is 11.00 for a “tent’er” and for covered housing it will be 20.00 a night from 05/01-09/30. (This will require a ferry ride to Vashon Island). It is better than trying live in hotels for $80-120.00 a night!!

Curently the Downtown Hostel is being moved to a better location. As seen here: http://www.hiseattle.org

With no experiance in crabbing your not going to put you foot in the door very fast! You might try doing Longline or Trawler’s first. BNF is a Longline company.

  8. Guy who is laughing at all of you Says:

Wow, are you serious? Emmy-nominated? This has to be the cheesiest shit I’ve ever read in my life. I’ve heard plenty about the job,and most of the people who go up there to do it don’t do it because it’s in their blood, but because drugs are in their bloodstream, and furthermore, the child support payments don’t make themselves, and her lawyer is out for blood. Besides, how do you think most of these guys who dont make the show keep a semi attractive lady friend? By blowing their money on them, like Mo did on that Simpsons episode. I mean seriously, you criticize the romanticized view people have of it, but then you just dish out the same type of cheesy shit, only in a slighty different package. Ive never crabbed, but I worked in the bottom of a slime eel boat for 5 hours one day, and I made a whopping 40 bucks, and ruined about 90 dollars worth of clothes. Im actually wearing the same shoes from that day right now, and yes, they still smell like salt a little bit. The thing is, I’m kind of cheap, and these are SUPERDUPER comfy shoes. But again, I digress… I got hit by 20 lb brick of frozen eels and it hurt, super bad. It hit the bone on my upper thigh, and totally bruised my shit up. So yup, think twice young’ns, being a crab fisherman doesnt make you tough, or cool, and it won’t solve what I would assume to be self worth and confidence issues.

But the unemployment thing is pretty badass

  9. Brian Says:

I didnt get a high school diploma, i also got in a little trouble that got me kicked out of school for a dumb reason. But i’m 21 now and working for a mickey mouse asphalt company for two and a half years, who dont give two shits about the guys who work to give them a big house and nice cars. but not to go on about it i had a horrbile life that kicks me when i’m far down. I’m not in it for the money because i’ve never had it. I know you dont to hear a sopp stories, but its the truth. I’m on a road to a desritive end,and i need a change quick and yesterday and please help me lead a good and a healthy life. P.S. I would be greatful to a crab fisherman thank you, hope to hear from you. [sincerely Brian Anthony Gonsalez]

I am 27 yrs old. I fished lobster, crab, and groundfish in Nova Scotia since I was 17. I was on a boat well I could remember. I have hauled lobster gear, codnets and trawl by hand. I enjoy watching the deadliest catch. But, alot of people believe these guys have it so tough out there. I disagree. There are at least 4 guys hauling gear. Come on boys! Someone is lazy. I do the same thing as you guys. However, we have one guy running the boat, and one guy taking care of the traps. And we fish on little 30’s. People think these Alaska guys got her tough. I dare say those guys wouldnt last a week on my boat. Try hauling 300 lobster traps in 5 hrs, then shaking 30000lbs of herring right afterwards. And do that for a month straight. Oh and do it with only 2 guys on the boat. Thats fishing.

I am fascinted with your jobs in and around the fishing industry and was born and raised in Anchorage , Ak.
What i would like to know is when does the crab season start and where would I go or whom do I talk to about working for people who do not like te word “QUIT”. If I am consisderd for an oppertunity to work for a “crabber”, I can tell you that that word will not be in my vocabulary.
I am very interseted in working for a serious man his crew and will do anything to achieve trhis accomplishment . Please take this as serious as I do and don’t think that I just want some “quick cash “.
I hope you will take this into consideration and pray for your saftey and all others safe return to their families as well.

    To Capt. Dan Jansen.
Regarding the message you left for Watts. Given if the offer you extended to Watts was true, I would love to take his place and take that challenge. Not because I believe as he does, but because I have wanted for a long time to take a job that would push my body to limits. I am not going to feed you some sob story or tell you some B.S reason that in no way involves fame, glory and the experience. The fact is I like the idea of participating in one of the deadliest jobs know to man; for the fame, for the glory; but most importantly for the personal satisfaction of knowing I can push my body to the limits and prevail. I never pass up the opportunity to test the limits of my body and would be thrilled at the opportunity to prove my determination. Besides, although I have no experience in the industry; I don’t sleep much, work well under pressure and absolutely hate to fail at anything that I do. What better qualifications than that. Just let me know.

    To Capt. Dan Jansen.
Im a commercial and industrial painter who works alot of hours. Anywhere from 15 to 16hrs a day. Sometimes 24 to 30hr shifts. I respect you guys in what u do. Thats some tough crap. And I know 90% percent of people wouldnt last an hour in u or ur crews shoes. My job consists of some dangerous task as well. Like sandblasting inside a watertank or barge for 12 hours n having the tank collapse on u cuz the damn metal wuz to thin. Or hanging from a safetyline 400 ft in the air while the wind blows 40 to 50 miles an hour. Plenty of times I probally should of been a goner. Not cuz of lack of experience or paying attention. Just the nature of the job. Ive got a kid on the way n family members to take care of so no need in complaining. The harder it gets the more I smile. Got to do what u got to do. So if u ever are looking for a new greenhorn I would be honored to grace ur presence n give it a shot. And once again much love n respect to u n yours. Be save out there and may god bless u n ur men. Good hunting to u.

My name is steven weishair and i am looking for a job on a crab boat into alaska and i have no prior experiance but i am a determined and a motivated individual. i want to learn how to fish for crab and go for a few years. i want to support my family i am planning on having because i am getting married in 2 months but need a higher paying joob so if there are any captians out there i dare you to read this message and just coinsider me an option. i love to fish in lakes but i know that is different. cold is not much i live in minnesota and i ware shorts every day of the year even for going outside for a few hours not kidding but i do stay up late and work sometimes and i have gone a whole week without sleep before actually on 2 hours but almost no sleep. i listen well and i am a very quick learner so please take me into coinsideration and that watts guy can shuv it. your lobster cages are only 45 lbs i’ve seen them before and lifted them you wouse the crabbers in Alaska have it harder than you because you fish in the atlantic right well i’ve seen that before to and your small boat you only need two people and a captian but the waves are minor compared to alaska so taht is why you have such a short boat to make it look and feel more like the PROS in ALASKA.

We (my wife and I) just came back from an Alaska cruise, we were lucky to hear about and sign up for the Crab fishing tour on the Aleutian Ballad. It may be the best tour Alaska has to offer. It was our second cruise, taking different tours and this was the best. I would recommend it to everyone (all ages). It was fun, very educational, Comfortable and afforable.

  52. Troy Says:

Though I’d love to think I could do the job on a crab boat I’m not going to kid myself. I’m to up in years and have had to many knee surgeries to even think of trying it.
I don’t have anymore respect for the guys that do the job than anyone else that does their job and does it well. These guys aren’t heros or supermen. The job is just something they do to make a living just like I do when I go to work everyday. The chances that they might die doing the job are much higher than mine are but that still don’t make them heros or eligable for any pats on the back. The world can live without crab. They do it for the money and greed.
I am very, very glad they are willing to fish crab because I love to eat it. As long as they catch it, I’ll pay for it. If it goes to $30 a pound I’ll still pay for it because I like it. If that means it’s easier for the crew to make a buck, fine by me.
One very disturbing fact is that people die fishing. Tragic. And pathetic. To give up ones life for the love of money is just wrong and all these guys know what the risk is everytime they go out. But as long as they go, I’ll eat it. I hope they can figure out how to catch it without losing crew to the sea.

  53. James Dean Says:

I’m so glad the new series has started, I used to fish alot a fews years back off the english channel and the north sea, The north sea can be quiet rough and wild a bit like me. I got very suprised to see how quick the ice cap comes down in the last series and I thought to myself fuck, me I can handle 30ft - 50ft breakers but ice and freezing cold and getting trapped in, I think I would have a fit, more like a fit of hysteria ha ha.
and why shouldn’t you lot be up for awards, you do a fantastic job, I also think sig would be the best captain to work for on any ship or vessle, just don’t eat sandwiches while counting crab, Sig’s face was a peach
but he had a lot on his mind at the time. But anyway, keep it up and safe fishing!……..thanks

I am female, but I watch this show every chance I get. I think it’s awesome. I realize that boat folklure says it’s taboo for females to be onboard, but if Sig and Edgor Hanson, ever decide to take a chance, I would love to be chosen to be a “greenhorn” even for just one season.

  59. Vicki Baker Says:

    This show rocks!!!

  60. robo Says:

how can a man from the mountains get a job on a boat, who do i have to woop

  61. Susanne Says:

DO the Aleutian Ballad tour in Ketchikan!! It is absolutely worth every cent! If you go to Ketchikan, and dont do this tour, you have missed out on a wonderful experience. I have no intention of getting a job in the industry and risking my life for a damn crab, but I think these guys are tough as nails for doing it. The Aleutian Ballad is as close as I intend to get to crab fishing.
Capt. David, Kiwi and Derek didnt miss a thing showing me all the wildlife/sealife and answering a million questions I had about their jobs. They even played the BonJovi song and let me have my “Titanic/Deadliest Catch Moment” at the bow of the ship!!! Derek pointed out the difference in good TV and good fishing, so now I have a better picture in my mind for what is going on in the show. Being onboard this ship has been instrumental in changing my train of thought regarding preserving what our nation has in Alaska.

…And Ladies, those are the hottest 3 guys in Ketchikan…perhaps Alaska. I’d have packed any of em in my luggage to take home!

  62. Steve Kelley Says:

  67. G Kindla Says:

In this line of work it’s not what you know it’s who you know to land a job. I could blow all kinds of smoke up ya keester and say I’m the best and I’m a hard worker, working endlessly for days on end etc. Ain’t gonna happen. This is a fan site and not a hiring site. I love the show and watch it weekly…I loved the episode when a greenhorn was hired and later was threatening to jump overboard unless he was taken back to dock. That’s typical of someone that thinks they can be a crab fisherman, but soon realize that the Bering Sea is not prejudice about who it takes.
Who wouldn’t want a job that pays you 20-35 grand for a short time of hard labor? The chances that you could cash in on those riches are roughly 35%….not great odds, but some would be willing to risk it. I like my odds.
Remember back in 86 when the Raven was top heavy and rolled over?…all 5 survived. I like my odds.

You stupid fucks,, do u really think a captain is gonna read you pathetic letters and respond with a job
offer, leave the fishing to the pros and go fuck off

  90. anon Says:

lmao, rofl. I totally agree with Jason the above poster, what the hell are the rest of yall doing posting your shitty pleas with the captain to get a job? Lol. The original blogger posted some additional links for those really interested in pursuing crab fishing, click on those you idiots. Quit posting shitty grammar resumes and pleas on how you want “to push your body to the limit” and “i am a skydiver/fireman/already work a real man’s job and this would complement my shitty physique” posts.

  91. Adam Says:

i think you fellas have balls of steel i love your show its awesome thanks for all the great shows love ya work keep it coming

  92. Coasty 35 Says:

Do any of the idiots begging for jobs on here have any maritime experience. You need to know the basics before you even can step foot on a boat up there. Basic knots, rescue survival, helmsman, able bodied seaman, nav rules to name a few. Just keep watching the show and stay off of the boats. Remember you not only endanger yourself by jumping into a profession like this but you also endanger the whole crew when you dont know what you are doing…I know they have shown some real sad sacks on the boats but for every one of those you have 20 other greenhorns that have been pretty much born on the water.

  93. SUNDAWG Says:

  96. Anonymous Says:

sun dawg, captains are the ones who hire and fire on crab boats, the only thing HR manager wil do is
get u a job gutting fish 14 hrs a day u stupid fuck, thats a fact jerk off

  97. Anonymous Says:

here s the deal if u want a job crabbing u need experience, so in the summer go up there and get some, no captain in the entire fleet will hire someone who writes these pathetic fucking letters. thats a fact jack. 9 out of 10 of you will discover that ur legs buckle and ur stomachs turn and u will hide in the bunk, so first see if u can even handle being on water let alone 30 foot waves and 60 mile an hour gusts of wind, trust me u will know within the first 10 minutes at sea, so dont waste ur time until u try it a little closer to ur home.

  98. Anonymous Says:

  104. fisherman's wife Says:

I have a question that I’m hoping someone can answer for me. My husband is working on a commercial fishing vessel out of Dutch Harbor (long-line, not a crab boat). The contract that he signed states that the company he works for will not pay him until the fish they caught is sold & paid for. He has been there for 3 months now and has not been paid anything for his work other than about $1500 in draws. Is this typical or is he getting jerked around?

  105. Aaron Beasley Says:

  116. Michael Gray Says:

Just wanted to say WOW!!! Never really sat back and thought how many people might actually consider being a crab fisherman…. and well here some knoledge for all the ones who read this shit and actually took it to heart. I currently reside in Reed City,MI it’s and awful place in wich you almost have to kill to get a job. I said to myself well this is something i could see myself doing and doing it well as long as you stay in a postive mind frame, and honestly if you have to kill for a job shouldnt getting a job where you could be possibly injured be a step up. I put it in perspective i worked at a manufacturing plant making mufflers for air compressors making ten dollars an a hour and quite possibly could have cut my fingers off in a press, had my legs crushed by bundles of steel tubing, anything really. Yeah yeah i understand the occurance rate of all these things happening on a fishing boat are far more likely then a machine shop but my point is you cant be afraid of it you need to take it on!!! I lost my job here in reed city i’m collecting unemployment and my plan is to make it up there a fullfill my curiosity if it’s not for me i tried i wont quit, i wont bitch, i’ll take the experice as is. Whether or not thats back to the sweat shop or preping pots for launch i sure ready for the experience of a lifetime.

This is to any captain of a crab boat. I would love the chance to go out with one of the crews.I have been to Alaska three times to purchase reindeer and I raise them in Alabama once to Nome and twice to Palmer. The trip requires sailing from Anchorge back down to Tacoma with the deer so I have been out to sea.I know this may not sound like much but try wrestling a reindeer in 20 below weather.I am 46 years young and know I can make you a good hand.I’m not scared of hard work or lack of sleep.I have been known to stay up as much as 67 hours working with no sleep. All of my trips to Alaska were done in Jan.I have watched the show since it began and have always said that I could do it.I am up to the challenge and would make a good if not the best greenhorn.Give me a shot and I won’t disappoint you.

  130. Matt Says:

I find it interesting that everyone post comments here like this is the place to put an application. You all talk about how you work hard and have no expierience but your motivated and are willing to learn. Come on guys seriously. Ive worked physical labor my whole life, i love to fish to. But when u apply for a job you dont do it on a blog. You do it on a companys website, or at a place of business.

Im sure that 90% of the jobs in the industry are attained through family or friends already in it. Its the same way as any other business really.

The commerical fishing industry also strikes me as similar to the contruction industry. When you first hire in the veterans are going to give you shit, and not just a little but alot. They are also going to yell at you for every screw up, and basically make fun of you relentlessly. They are going to give you only the bitch work period.

Not only is there a mental barrier you have to get past but you must also get past the physical requirements which are strenous. So basically can you take being shit on mentally and physically perpetually for an entire crab season.

Its a hard job for hard men. So do yourselves a favor and if your really serious about doing it, do the research and find out where you really need to go to apply.

Some of you people are really quite creepy, and almost seem insane. Talk about people being unrealistic, I mean you people should be ashamed. Instead of begging for some pipe dream 99 percent of you and including me couldn’t even handle..whats the point? If you put as much energy into your current career you might actuallly make it out there, but sitting on the internet daydreaming doesn’t help. I visited this site wondering the length of these guys season and how much they make, and stumbled upon all this mess. You people can’t honestly think you have even the slightest chance at becoming one of these guys? Geezeeee…

alright, first i feel like a bit of a dumbass for posting a job application on here but i am bored so i figure what the hell. I am a 20 year old fishermen. I have worked with my family since i have been born. At 17 i went up being one of the only girls around and fished bristol bay. The next year i bought my own gillnet permit and have been running my own boat going on 3 years. I have seined, gilnetted, longlined, and tendered. I have never crabbed but am open minded and willing to learn. I want to crab and would love to prove that a woman can do the work that is done on the berring sea. I bust my ass and know both angles from being a skipper and a crewmember. I am used to working extremally long hours and in harsh conditions and would love to prove women can too do this work. :)

How much exactly do you get from working on the boats?

I’m strapped financially and am willing to prostitute myself to a shit life on a crab boat to make ends meet for my family.

I even considered the chances of dying and reckon I’ll be sweet if i take out life insurence for $500k or something as will be win/win for my partner.

So how much we talking about?

  198. Rich Kennedy Says:

I have been trying to do this for quite some time now and have had no luck. I could care less about the TV. show and all the fame of crabbing. What appeals to me it the camaraderie between the crew-members, a family away from home is I guess what you can call it. Putting your life on the line and knowing that the people you work with care just as much as you, lack of sleep day in and day out to get a reward that you really earn in the end. I’m married with four children in a struggling economy. I have worked for temp agencies and did everything I can to retain employment but it all comes down to cheap labor. I’m tired of promises of being hired on in a company to stay with the temp agency for crap wages because it’s more economical for them. I hope that someone on here might be able to help me. I served four years aboard a nuclear submarine and I’m not a stranger to anything this planet has to throw at me. I’m from Iowa and have a background in almost everything that requires back breaking work, long hours, and sacrifices. It all comes down to doing what I have to do for my family. I want to give my children and wife what they deserve. I don’t want to wonder where I’m going to get my money for the next week. If anyone see’s this and feels like they can help me or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I can be reached at richk1982@yahoo.com . I really hope someone will take a chance on me, I can only promise to strive to be the best and give it my all, all of the time.

  199. josh landsaw Says:

Hi I know every one has their own opion about how hard shit is, but to me nothings realy hard unless you want it to be. Like there is alot of hard stuff out there in life but every day what you think is hard there are people love doing what you think is hard and laughing while they do it. So hard to me is a mind thing. The hardest thing I have ever endured is sitting at home on the couch….. Why you say well living in little town that has nothing but banks and resturaunts and gerocery stores is not much of a place to live. While i set there at home on the couch I set and whatch my wife go to work at the old folks home as a kitchen aid making a whopping 300 every two weeks and watching her get paid and then get paid and wish the god she could afford some womens undergarments or sitting there watching my 5 month old son with his innacont look on his face and he sneaks a grin in there that melts your heart. Mean while, while he is grinning at me I set a wonder If my wife can’t afford undergarments what in the hell is he gonna miss out on…….. So yeah why some people just want to try it out and see what crab fishing is like or get on t.v thats all fine cause if the have no sense of value or any thing to break their back for every job they ever try is gonna be hard. Most likely every job the try will break their pride and they will quit and for that moment of freedom from their terriable experince the sigh with relief then go home 3 or 4 weeks later see some else new doing the same thing they just quit,,,, then it hits them damn why did i give that up i had the best thing going now i have nothing. So for me I have my wife’s undergarments (figure of speach) and my sons future to think about i don’t care about t.v. or the 15 min of fame. Yeah I know there is danger to worry about but every thing in life has its danger zones and consaquenes. So if by some miracle the Northwestern (sig) or the time bandit or any other fishing crew see fit to use another person I am here and if i get a chance I will give it my most honest try ever it dont even have to be a fishing crew on t.v just any one there but of course my why there will have to paid to get there cause i live in kentucky my number i can be contacted is 606 796 9831

  200. Matt From Cleveland Ohio Says:

A lot of people think also that since they’ve been watching the show for years and think that they have what it takes to work on a crabbin boat, odds are they are wrong. im only 17, and ive been watching the show since it came out, and have wondered what it be like to work. but then reality kicked in and said im not cut out for it, cause of what my peers have said. “ill never be a hard enough worker to last one day in the real world”. it doesnt feel real threatening or meaningful to most, but for me to hear that told me ill show them.. now here i am 17 years old and im working 11 to 13 hours shifts 4 days a week, on top of holding two other part time jobs. Heck landscaping shopping centers may not seem like hard work but its teaching me a good work ethic. thats what i need is the best work ethic i can make myself do. to me i think one cannot get any better work ethic than working on a crabbin boat, ive looked up what it takes to work on a boat. how hard they push u to get the most honest work they can give their captians, and i feel it, it is hard, no doubt and i can only imagine how proud i would make myself if i could work that hard for the work ethic, yea sure money is good too cause im only human, but money is only paper with ink on it, and nothing more. Yea id love to do it for the experience like anyone else would do, and yea id do it for money, so i dont have debt later in life (ive had a real problem w debt in my family and i cant say how much i hate the word money or any word like that now). i also say that dont judge a man by what he is but by what he does. do describe a man of who he is can go on exaggerating forever, but by what he does is shown by his work. that is what makes a real man. someday if i ever get out of this godforsaken place and get out ther in the world, crab fishing for a captian of a crabbin boat is on the top of my list. i respect the captians for what they stand for and how hard they work themselves, and by how ive seen these past 7 seasons of the show, and how much your hard work means to them, and how hard they want to see you work not for money but for the love of what they all do, earn my upmost respect. i cant tell all of the captains of any of the crabbin boats, whether there featured or not, for how much they have driven me to work harder and harder every day, i continue to watch in awe of all of your work ethics and your love for crab fishing, maybe one day i might join you to learn an even better work ethic and gain the knowledge that is vital for this trade. i have the upmost respect for all of you, i hope all of you have a safe and rewarding season, i keep all of you in my prayers, good luck! and keep up the amazing work that all you have displayed for me! GOD bless, and have a season that u dedicate it for, the love of being out there on the sea.

  202. josh landsaw Says:

well matt from cleveland glad to know you know the meaning of life now when your only 17 probaly never even left home yet , let me school you for a sec work does not make a real man, you dont have to have a hard back breaking job to become a man . When you move out on your own no help from any body and get married and have a kid in this day and time and before you go to sleep at night you look into your kids eyes and see that he is glad to be there in your arms or look in into wifes eyes and as she drifts off to sleep you can see a little grin on her then you relize hey this is my family but yeah money is just paper with ink but you don’t see the reality of it tho when you become grown and start your own family money is more than just paper with ink it’s your familys food they eat , the water that baths you , it help’s to see at night , it’s gets you to and from work , and most of all it helps you live. Work is not what defines a human being as a man it’s the impression you leave on people and the sense of values uoy have.

You men think because you brag about your so called experience and fishing past that you are going to be an option. If you want something, go out and get it. Dont sit here on the internet typing to them about why you should, go to them and prove you can. Now, I’ve watched the show for a while, and experiencing what they do, and coming out alive would be the greatest accomplishment you can earn in my opinion, but if you want to be an alaskan crab fisherman, get your ass a car, drive to Alaska, take some names, and finally, step up and tell them you just drove that far to get a chance, and you are not leaving until you show them why you should at least be a consideration.

Good luck to all of you trying to succeed in this field, If i ever had the chance I would take it in a heartbeat, so I hope if you guys do, you come back here and blog about it.

  254. Dave Waddle Says:

    To: Captains and Deck Bosses:

Why pay your deckhands all that money to cook when they can be on-deck fishing. You can get a cook a lot cheaper, say travel and $200/day. An experienced cook who cooked in the U.S.M.C. long ago and recent cooking for caterer and church. I also spent 6 and a half months at sea cooking 3 meals a day with only 2 days off (Requested for Tour). Never got seasick like probably 15-20% of the Marines. Poor guys were green in the gills and lived in the can and shower for 3 days, trying to keep Crackers and diluted drinks down.

Anyways, let me know the favorite foods/dishes, dislikes, food alergies of the other people onboard and I can figure up a menu plan for X weeks. And buy the right quantities and spices, AND PLENTY OF COFFEE for the food store onboard.

I also was EMT and worked in E/R in 5 years. Performed CPR all the time and qualified in sterile procedures; for one thing to clean wounds before bandaging for prevent infection. I would suggest making sure everyone on board has had Tetnus shot in last 5 years. Maybe a physical and dental exam, so someone isn’t hiding a sore back or dosen’t get an abcessed tooth during these short periods of time when you need all hands healthy. I’d also like to look at your first-aide supplies to see if anything needed; usually not expensive. But could keep you from making an unexpected, and costly trip back to shore.

I have more suggestions, if you wish!
Again, I don’t drink, since 9/3/95, but do smoke.
R\T ticket from Cincy and $200/day at sea, and $100/day port.
    Good luck and God speed!

  267. Robert Anderson Says:

I am actually curious if anyone has actually applied to all the seafood processing companies mentioned above. I am looking at the company websites right now and most of them are pretty much hiring. But I am sure there is a reason for this as most people do not like hard labor but I have been in and out of hard labor all my life. Factories, Overnight Stocking/Truck Unloading; mainly physical stuff and I love it. Sucks being treated like crap but the money is worth it and actually so is meeting all the people that do it. No matter how crappy hard physical labor may be you always got your co-workers there who are just like a family in the end to support you in hard times and you doing the same for them.

I am actually considering applying for a couple of these seafood processing plants and see what happens. Regardless of the temperature or the harsh conditions; Alaska is a very beautiful state. Obviously I have also been watching Deadliest Catch since the premiere of the show. Wouldn’t be here otherwise. I commend all the captains, deckhands and their greenhorns for providing seafood for me to eat. Hope 2010 is great for you guys and please be safe; you are definitely in everyone’s prayers.
