“Words to Live By” From the Captain’s Mouth
As we enter the final hours before the Season 3 Premier, here are some memorable quotes from Captains of Deadliest Catch in Season 2:
Episode 222: Cashing In
Phil of the Cornelia Marie: “Now you know why lions eat their young.” (Phil commenting on the hand-coiling competition with son Jake.)Episode 221: Race Against the Ice
Eric of the Rollo: “Love it … love it, man! Drowning in crab … love this! What it’s all about here, baby!” (Eric sorting crab with the crew. The Rollo’s “on the crab” and he’s ecstatic.)Episode 220: Pribilof Stare
Sig of the Northwestern: “Some guys — it’s worse. They take their personal lives up here with them and they sit here and dwell on things. You can’t do your job when you’re still at home in your mind.” (About Nick Mavar)Episode 219: On the Edge
Phil of the Cornelia Marie: “You go through a couple marriages, smoke cigarettes like it’s going out of style, your body aches from the time you get up to the time you go to bed, and you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about where you’re going to put the next pot. Yeah, it’s a great lifestyle.”Episode 218: Man vs. Ice
Sig of the Northwestern: “I might end up spankin’ myself for no reason.” (On deciding whether or not to fish opilio and face the weather or stick with cod fishing.)Episode 217: Smoke on the Water
Rick of the Maverick: “I just hope I can get back to dock without turning this sucker into a giant popsicle.” (On facing a gale storm and retreating to Saint Paul Island.)Episode 216: A New Hunt Begins
Eric of the Rollo: “It’s still man against Mother Nature out there, so you can’t get too over-cocky. You gotta know just how smart you are.”Episode 215: Friends and Rivals
Blake of the Maverick: “Oh … I just got crapped on — even the birds don’t respect me.” (After being denied the captain’s chair and then having a bird poop on him.)Episode 214: The Finish Line
Corky of the Aleutian Ballad: “We thought we didn’t have any current problems, but evidently I was wrong!” (Spoken just before getting smacked by a rogue wave.)Episode 213: On the Crab
Phil of the Cornelia Marie: “We cheated death one more time. I feel like a one-legged man in an a**-kicking contest.”Episode 212: Batten Down the Hatches
John of the Time Bandit: “Ain’t very pretty out there is it? Not fit for man or beast.”Episode 211: Heading Out to Sea
John of the Time Bandit: “Just enough wind to keep the flies off our backs.” (On weather warnings)

I don’t know if this is where I should be commenting on the “Below Board” behavior of Sig and his merry band of “meanhorns” on the Northwestern last week. I am referring to Sig, being rude one minute and then trying to be a pal to his greenhorn temporary hand. I can’t remember the young man’s name, but if I were his mother and I had to watch Sig, Ed and “Jailbait” treat my son like a piece of crap, call him names, tell him to “Shut the Fuck up!” AND then tease him until he eats a raw fish heart (I Think) and then throw it up on camera, I would probably be waiting at the dock heavily armed and mad as hell. You don’t deserve good help!
The Northwestern was my favorite boat and crew until you all behaved like a bunch of bullies on a big bender. I’ m not really a fan anymore. But when you talk about “Bad ju ju” (spelling?) just remember you brought it on yourselves.
What a shame.
